  • Gospel Fly: Witnessing Tool for Christians....don't let it scare ya, some woodworking ideas in there too.

Hey Guys, this page will show some attempts I've made at various woodworking things.   Most of 'em are just ideas that might spark a creative idea for "real" wood workers.  They're all made from wood I can supply though.

The below idea was prompted by reading/looking at the neat boxes that some of you make.  Don't know how you do it but the corners are all square...the 45's are all 45'd.....amazing...miraculous...at least to me.

Sooo, I entitled the following tutorial....wait.....it's not a tutorial......but I call it "Squares, we don' need no stinking squares".....

To cut to the chase....it's gonna be a stamp box/paper clip holder thingy.   As I said, it won't be square..too much work, but I guess you'd have to call it a geometric shape with no parallel sides.  Started off with two generic blocks of wood about 2 1/ 2 x 4ish long, drilled a forstner bit hole in each,  all the way through.....I think those are about 1 3/8 diameter, about the size of a roll of stamps. I used redwood as that's what I have plenty of...soft...sands easily.  I sanded all the sides flat but sloped/angled, whatever looked kind of cool.   I ended up using 5 species of wood.....five sides....worked out even.  ; )   There's redwood lace burl, spalted maple, manzanita, buckeye burl and desert ironwood for the top. Since there are no parallel sides to put a clamp on, I had to glue the thins on one at a time.  First pic shows the buckeye already glued and trimmed.....maple freshly glued, ready to sand off everything that doesn't belong.

Two pics below show redwood with glue setting.....note the two bandsaw cuts that the stamps will come out of.  Ironwood tops are glued on and sanded.  Bottom right, after gluing the thin on, you can cut the stamp slot using the existing slots as a guide.

Drilled a hole as shown for the pin that will keep the stamps from falling out.  Hole goes completely through the one side and as far as you want on the far side....just don't go through the thinwood.  Bottom right..after spraying on a little Deft clear finish.

More finished pics...just......because......first one is redwood burl....right is ironwood.

Below  is bottom view, squirted a little plain old wood glue in the hole.....wood is actualy on the bottom of the "top" if the whole thing was "right side up".  The little round things with the allen wrenches on them are very strong magnets....got 'em out of an old 'puter hard drive.  Used the allen wrenches to put 'em in the right place, pulled 'em off when the glue set up a bit.  Right hand pic shows two High Impact Ferrous Fastening Accessories......commonly called HIFFA's.....or painted nails.....whichever you prefer.   I did grind the heads down a bit, cut 'em to length and spray painted 'em gold with some old metallic paint that has been in my way for years.   It pays to be a "hoarder"......  ; )

Finished boxes, nail on left hand side looks like it's going in high.....that's just a reflection.   Bottom right shows finished "guts" of the whole kaboodle....

Those super magnets have no problem reaching through the wood and holding oodles of clips.

If you stuck it out and read this far down, thank you....If you need thinwood go to....rockbswes...never mind....I guess that's a little too obvious.....  ; )

Another easy to make idea.

Here's a litle idea that some of you might enjoy making.  Very simple, fun to make but looks kind of cool.

All you  need is a piece of wood (manzanita on this one)  that looks like the Matterhorn.  I can help there for about $7.50 per block.....it won't look exactly like mine but with a little grinding/shaping you'll make it look like any mountain you want.  It'll have one flat side (bottom) and a "sticking up" piece that you can shape.  On this one, the white area was a little bit of sapwood that I just ground down until it was steep enough to look like a cliff.  If you can braze or gas weld.....or have a buddy who can.....you're half way there.   Oh yeah, then you gotta find a horse.....throw him down, pull the nails out of a horseshoe.....you only need five....or just go to a feedstore and buy a few nails, whichever is easiest for you.  ; )   Get a wire coat hanger, bend it like in the pics......put a little hook on the ends and hang something half way heavy on them.  I used fishing weights.......but if you're a wood turner, maybe turn a couple little "weight shaped" thingys....  The key is to have them hanging lower than the man.   You can't see it in the pics but the man's  elbows are bent at a 90 degree angle and the hanger welded to his "hands".   I made this one with him standing on one leg, other one bent like he's losing his balance.   There's a real small finishing nail in the wood, it has a little indent in it, that holds the man in place.   You can spin him around, he turns for a long time......pretty hard to make him fall off.

Okay, enough of that.....go to work......  : )
