For Sale....Shopsmith Model 10ER, $350.
Hi Guys, I'm going to have to sell the first Shopsmith that I ever bought. Although most people call these Shopsmiths, they were really manufactured by Magna Engineering. Look over this information below copied from Wikipedia............
Shopsmith has its origins in the ShopSmith 10ER tool, a five-in-one woodworking tool for do-it-yourself consumers invented in the late 1940s by Hans Goldschmidt, an immigrant from Germany. It found a ready market among new homeowners in the period after World War II (1939–45). The compact ShopSmith 10ER combined a table saw, lathe, drill press, disc sander and horizontal boring machine. It was manufactured by Goldschmidt’s Magna Engineering Corporation of San Diego, California. Successive models included additional accessories such as a bandsaw, jigsaw, jointer and belt sander. The lawn and garden tool manufacturer Yuba Power Products of Cleveland, Ohio bought Magna and the ShopSmith product line in the late 1950s. A few years later a group of Yuba employees founded Magna American Corporation and purchased the ShopSmith assets. They started manufacturing in Raymond, Mississippi, but their company ceased operation prior to 1966.
Since you're reading this you probably know about the 10ER machine pictured below. All the pieces in the pics are what you get. Pics show it pretty well. If you don't see a part, it's not included. : ) Note it does have a speed changer that was broken when I got it. It broke where all the rest of them break....apparently a weak spot but this was professionally welded and will probably outlast original factory changers. BTW, speed changers can be purchased occasionally, usually starting around $150 and up. It's mounted on a very stout but easily moved base.
It belonged to a gentleman who meticulously re-furbished and powder-coated it and then unfortunately passed away. I've used it for many years. It could use a little tender loving care even now but starts right up and runs smoothly with the original AO Smith 1/2 hp. motor.
Asking price $350.00.
For sale: Vintage rustic bench that in another life was the base for one of the first models of the famous Shopsmith woodworking machines. The Shopsmith 10E and 10ER were first made about 1947. So, this bench is about 70 years old. Here's some info about the machine from Toolhunter.com; "First off it’s important to know that the ShopSmith brand name has passed through several hands since it was originally attached to a machine conceived by a German immigrant to the US in the late 1940’s. Hans Goldschmidt invented the first ShopSmith tool, a 5-in-1 woodworking tool that met the demands of the burgeoning new DIY market in the USA. During and immediately after WWII many Americans who had learned new trade skills and who were becoming homeowners in record numbers were looking for outlets for their new skills and to add value to their new investment. These two factors combined to create an unprecedented need for compact and affordable woodworking tools, which is just what Mr. Goldschmidt had invented." This bench has retractable steel wheels....they had to be industrial strength to hold the machine. It rolls easily but when the wheels are retracted, it is very stable. Note the old growth vertical grain Douglas Fir base boards. Quality like that is hard to find now. They measure 1 5/8" thick x 7 1/2" wide x 56" long. The bench is 18" wide x 20" tall and 56" long. Use it as a bench or to display special pieces. This bench will still be around for another 70 years. : ) $100.00 firm price.......pickup in Redding, CA.
